Index Data Explorer is an open-source web application for exploring and visualizing multidimensional datasets stored in Elasticsearch indices. Users can interactively filter datasets and create aggregations at runtime. Therefore, separate data extracts do not have to be created for every individual analysis. The application can be used to investigate data integrity, identify correlations between data fields and generate recurring statistical evaluations, such as monthly statistics grouped by districts or other attributes. The default configuration is data-driven and can be used with different Elasticsearch indices. The configuration can also be customized for specific datasets and use cases. The application is implemented using HTML, CSS and object-oriented vanilla JavaScript. It uses only a small number of open-source libraries, including Leaflet and D3, and does not require frontend frameworks such as React, Vue or Angular. Index Data Explorer can be hosted entirely within an organization's own infrastructure. It can also be operated without an internet connection, making it suitable for sensitive datasets that must not leave the organization or be transferred to external cloud services. The application can be operated on a standard computer, a local web server or in a container environment. Elasticsearch is used as the data backend. Compatibility with OpenSearch is expected due to its compatibility with Elasticsearch, but has not yet been explicitly tested. The software is provided under the MIT License by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, DFKI GmbH. Its development was supported by the Modellprojekte Smart Cities programme funded by the German federal government.
